About 

Joel Viera is a bassist, composer, and educator from New York City of Puerto Rican descent. He began playing upright bass at the age of 13 and has since developed a deep passion for jazz the rich tradition of improvised music.

Joel is a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where he studied classical bass under Bill Ellison. He later earned his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from The City College of New York and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at CCNY.

Over the years, Joel has studied with and been mentored by acclaimed bassists including Vasilis Koutsonanos, Rob Duguay, Neal Miner, and Luques Curtis. His musical experiences range from performing traditional jazz and original compositions to collaborating with vocalists and large ensembles.

As both a performer and bandleader, Joel strives to create music that is honest, swinging, and deeply connected to the jazz tradition while embracing modern influences and exploring the spiritual aspects of life.
